Subbing In And Setting The Theme
SPEAKER_02Hey, welcome to Go Mad with Doug and Brad. But in this case, go mad with Doug and Jesse, who is usually along with Doug and Brad during the Go Mad with Doug and Brad podcast. In a land far away. In a land far away, i.e., six feet away from us behind us in the booth producing it. So now this is go mad with Doug, not Brad and Jesse, but usually Brad. Right. Did I clarify that?
SPEAKER_00No, the title is perfect. I am the substitute teacher that no one really asked for, but I'm here.
SPEAKER_02I'm here. That's right. So do you remember the first Bible you read or like maybe had as a kid? Because I I had like one I I have one of those um big uh Bible like picture. Picture Bible. And I remember being shocked as I grew older. There's words in the Bible. Yeah. It was it was really actually great to see how much more there was when I got my second Bible that had words in it.
SPEAKER_00Kids nowadays don't know what they have. They have like Bible graphic novel. I I think I had the same thing. The picture bible. The action Bible. Yeah. The picture Bible was like the precursor to that, and it was just like I I grew up with that too. But what I really remember is growing up in the 90s, we had um we had some extreme Bibles. Oh, they even recalled that. That's what they're doing. And leaving off the T-Not. And you have to leave off the Bible. And it was like real, like everything was grungy and it was like had all these pop-outs throughout over like, like, what's all this about? Like, what's the deal? It would be like these little explanatory notes on the side. And I mean, it worked. It's great.
SPEAKER_02It's a great way to get you interested. We're uh that's why uh yeah, we're we're we're jumping in today. Most misused verses. Now, of course, there might be ones more misused than the ones we're bringing up, but these are ones like that Jesse and I have Curated. Curated the substitute teacher now curating. Well, there's there's uh um some real bad stuff going on.
Why Bible Misuse Is Growing
SPEAKER_02I I I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but if you listen to the Barna group, they do all those polls, the Barna polls. Um they recently did some um uh polling questions about American Christians in the Bible. If I was uh highlighting giving this a headline, and man, it's a nightmare. Get this. According to them, the weakest area of biblical alignment across all demographics, even among committed Christians, is in views regarding marriage, abortion, sanctity of human life, personal ethics. Only 5 to 16 percent of adults possessing a biblical alignment in this category. Five to sixteen percent. Um that that probably lines up with how many what what gets lied about the most is going to say this in our culture.
SPEAKER_00Those are really the hot topic issues of the case.
SPEAKER_02Exactly, exactly. And and hey, great news, it's getting worse with every generation. So so thanks, Doug. So we'll see you next time. I'm going, man. Lovely. And really the bottom line that we try to get to is here is how do we engage God's word in such a way where we're not trying to get it to say what we want it to say, but rather understanding what God means it to say. Not always the simplest thing. Man, all
“Lord, Lord” And False Assurance
SPEAKER_02right, I'm gonna do I'm just gonna do a tough one here. Matthew 7, um, 21 through 23. Not everyone who says to me, Lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom of heaven. This is one of the scary ones. But only the one who does the will of my father who is in heaven. I've heard this one misused a lot. And many will say to me on that day, Lord, didn't we prophesy in your name? And in your name drive out demons, and in your name perform many miracles? Then I will tell them plainly, I never knew you away from me, you evildoers.
SPEAKER_00How have you heard that one misused?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I well, I'm gonna tell you how I misused it. Okay. Yeah. Uh and and that's why um I don't know if there's a world of folks misusing this, but I know that that I this verse scared me so much when I was a younger man that I thought it was saying, you better obey God harder. You better do more religious things. Well, the will of God of my father in heaven, I'm I'm supposed to be doing lots of Christian stuff. Um so I felt like the more I would I would do those things that I thought were the things Christians are supposed to do, that I would gain more peace about this terrifying thing never being said to me. Wow. Um so I I literally believed this about this verse for about half my life. And now something different in the second part. God does not want us, the reason these scriptures are in the Bible, I heard someone say once, uh uh 1 John, there's the reason that's even in the Bible is God's grace doesn't want you, yeah, examine yourselves in the faith, but he doesn't want you terrified, going through your life, terrified that you aren't going to heaven. Right. Um so I thought this was all about you better get your act together, do more religious stuff. When it's actually much more about you're already doing lots of religious looking stuff, if we unpack this. But though you're trusting activity and maybe even like cultural Christianity to save you instead of me. If we believe Jesus here and we do, he says if you want to avoid these scary words, I've got to know you. I've got to know you. As in, we need to have a holy connection, a relationship. From that connection through things like regular prayer and Bible study, you're going to grow in your knowledge of my will, of my father's will, and grow in your desire to do his will. So follow me here. The life of someone living in obedience to God will look a lot different than a life of doing religious things. Um my doing religious stuff, back to a little bit of my story here, was I was going to be a Christian artist in Nashville. And if I'm being honest at this point, and when I look back at it, I think I wanted to be a Christian rock star. I wanted people to like my songs, I wanted people to like me. And uh if I'm being honest now, I think that's where it was. And for a while I believed it was for the Lord. Right. Christian activity, doing a Christian thing for God, but no, it was for me. So when I stopped to really listen to the Lord in college, he made it clear that obedience was actually going to the Hopi Indian Reservation. What? It doesn't make sense, Lord. What about the desires of my heart? You made me love music, yes. But he wanted to use that desire and that that love of music, the gift he gave me and other gifts to draw Native American young people to himself. I want to be careful because a a life truly in service of Jesus, it's going to exhibit fruit. There is no doubt about that. Without fruit, without works, it it's not a real faith. But it's the difference, see, between the rotten fruit of a life doing religious things out of tradition or culture versus a life of good fruit coming out of relationship and obedience to him coming from that relationship, that whole you never knew me. Um because by the way, these things that they're saying that they did are legit things. We were driving out demons. Um but but at the end of the day, when you're plugged in to our Father God through a relationship with Him through Jesus, He is going to and we and you build it through prayer and Bible study. He is going to put your put your heart in a place where you want to hear his will and obey it. I think that's more what that scripture is. Trevor Burrus, Jr.

I could have just said that the good things that I do don't make me right with God, but because I am right with God, I'm going to do I'm going to do good things. I mean that's good. Bear fruit. But when we when we get them backwards, that really is a dangerous place to be. Trevor Burrus, Jr. It is.

“Be Still” As A Warning
SPEAKER_00Psalm 46, 10. Oh boy. I'm so we just got to jump into it. Trevor Burrus, Jr. I don't want Hobby Lobby to get mad at us because people are returning their coffee mugs with these verses on them. Trevor Burrus, Jr.
SPEAKER_02Call for Jetsy Callugi.
SPEAKER_00Somehow Hobby Lobby. Could you stop having people return these coffee mugs? This is a well- and here's the problem. This is a coffee mug verse. Right. Trevor Burrus, Jr. Some of those are some of the most misused ones. So Psalm 4610 is the be still and know that I am God verse. Now here's the context, just backing up to verse eight. Come behold the works of the Lord, how he has brought desolations on the earth. He makes wars cease to the end of the earth. He breaks the bow and shatters the spear. He burns the chariots with fire. Be still and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth. The Lord of hosts is with us, the God of Jacob is our fortress. Now I think most often when we quote, be still and know that I am God, it's Hey, chill. Hey, just know I'm God. Like it's okay. And that's not the context of this Psalm. This the Psalm is saying the Lord is speaking. He's saying, um, to all the nations that exist, stop. I'm God, not you. And I will be exalted in every nation that there is. Now, does that end up bringing comfort to God's people? Yes, in a different way. I think most often we're like, hey, we just need to be st we need to just be still. But God's not speaking actually to us, He's speaking to the nations. Whoa. Nations, listen up. Look at me. I'm God. Period. Um that's good. That is uh a a different um angle. Do we receive comfort from that? Yes. But it's not the kind of comfort I think that we normally get from just being like, hey, just chill out, man.
SPEAKER_02Sure. I that that's you know, the the um while it's true that knowing God is in control can be comforting, that's not what that particular scripture is about.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_02Um you can find other scripture about God's sovereignty. Totally. But um but boy, that's because that's an important you think about, especially in this day and age, the importance, the vitality of God saying, um, take a minute, take a breath to every nation, I am God.
SPEAKER_00That's good, man. I'm learning. And again, like you said, there are other scriptures that communicate a similar thing. Right. It's just not really what this scripture is about. Exactly, exactly, man.
SPEAKER_02All right, so talking about uh in that vein here, um let's see here.
“Judge Not” And Righteous Discernment
SPEAKER_02Uh I got judged not lest you be judged, uh, Matthew 7. I'm not going to spend a real long time on this one. I think a lot of folks know that um this can kind of be uh one that we like to use as kind of a blanket excuse to deflect accountability. You're judging me. Oh, okay. Um, or get out of discussing some of God's more challenging commandments. Um that ministry leader should not have cheated on his wife. Hey, stop judging, you know, judge or or don't judge her, you're gonna be judged. Jesus isn't Jesus actually says to judge things righteously. He actually says in John 24, stop judging by just appearances, but instead judge correctly. The idea here is that we're not coming at a situation looking at somebody and going, man, am I glad. This is what the Pharisees did. Am I glad I've got my act together?
SPEAKER_01Wow.
SPEAKER_02Uh, because that guy really doesn't. And by the way, I'm probably gonna let him know, sure, I got a plank in my eye, sure it's just a speck in theirs. Um, that's what again, Jess, you've brought it up several times. We're gonna talk about a little bit at the end here, but this is so vital. Look at the context, look at what else is being said around this verse, look at look at the whole of God's word um when you're trying to figure out what uh uh particular scripture says. So Jesus not prohibiting discernment, he's just warning us against being a hypocrite, self-righteous, in in what I call unmerciful condemnation. Wow. Ooh, hold on. Don't be a hypocrite. We know if we've all met those hypercritical folks, maybe you've been one. Um I think I have been one at a point in my life. Uh, real good at finding the minor faults of others while ignoring their own major flaws. So get the plank out. This is about judging righteously. Like we said, uh John in John, Jesus says, uh, judge correctly. And finally, man, being humble and grace-filled. I think the warning here, the idea of this Matthew 7, verse 1, is don't be harsh and unforgiving in your judgment, or it'll be used that way against you in the same way you're judging. That's interesting to me that how God decides to judge you on something has something to do with how we look at other people and their struggles.
SPEAKER_00Um, doesn't that remind you of forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors? God forgive me like I forgave so and so. It's like man, that really puts it in context. It doesn't mean that we don't hold each other accountable, right? But it might change the the manner of my my posture, my heart, my attitude. It might affect that a lot. That's so good.
SPEAKER_02I'm assuming you got another one.
SPEAKER_00The math tells me you have another one. You have mathed right.
David And Goliath In The Big Story
SPEAKER_00First Samuel chapter 17. Now, this is the story of David and Goliath. I'm using this as um as kind of exhibit A. This is just an story. It's like the story, okay. And I think it can go for a lot of stories in the Bible, especially Old Testament stories. I can call it airlifting stories out of the big story. So imagine a helicopter coming in and airlifting this story out of the big story of the Bible.
SPEAKER_02Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Um so you know the story of David and Goliath. David is uh is volunteers to go fight this giant that nobody else in the Israelite army wants to fight, and God gives him the victory. And often I've I've heard this communicated as you have giants in your life, and if you trust God, God can use you to take down the giants in your life. Now, is that true? Sure. Sure. Yes. Um We have a good and a right desire, inherently, I think, as Christians, to want to apply the Bible to our lives. So when we open up the Bible and we read a story, we say, I want to apply that, and that's good. We should want to apply it. We should want to do something with it. We're not just reading for entertainment or information. We we want to be changed by it. Um so we're prone, I think, to airlift this story out of the big story and take it apart and just be like, well, where do I fit in?
SPEAKER_02Right, sure.
SPEAKER_00The the danger of doing that is is that what the original author was trying to do? Right. If we ask the question, we just slow down and say, what is the original author saying to the original audience? Um sometimes that's a difficult question, but it might protect us from inserting ourselves into the story. So we would automatically want to say, Well, I'm like David, Goliaths are the problems in my life. Um I can take them down with trusting God, and there you have it. That's what David and Goliath is about. And if we go, is that what the author was trying to do? Now, to be fair, um, do I want to be like David and trust God? Yes, absolutely. I I do want to copy him. Is that something to aspire to? Yes. Is that the point of the story? I'd say, no. What's the point of the story? Well, the point of the story is Israel needs a king. Um, in fact, if we read through Judges, it ends with, and there was no king in Israel, and everyone did what they wanted. And so the whole point of this uh this storyline up to the up to this point is Israel needs a king and they need a good king. We had Saul and Saul's not doing so well. We need a king to lead us in God's ways. We also need a king who will trust God and who will take down the giants in the land. So why didn't Israel enter the land to begin with? Giants were too scared to go in. Well, here comes David, who's someone who trusts God, who believes God, and who goes after the giants in the land. And so we see God providing the perfect deliverer for his people that ultimately we see he does in Christ for us.
SPEAKER_02Oh man.
SPEAKER_00In that story, we see, oh, God provides the hero. God provides the hero that we need. And it that's actually not me. Who is that for us? Well, ultimately, that's Jesus. Um, what we do is then we're seeing the story in the big picture of the whole story. We're not just saying, How how do I apply this individual story to my life? It's what does this mean in the grand scheme of the world?
SPEAKER_02So the point of it is to point us towards the ultimate king in Jesus. I I so I'm I'm I'm uh you you may have, without even realizing it, introduced us to Herman.

SPEAKER_02Herman, his last name is Udix. To Herman Udix. Big fancy word for all this uh looking in context and and looking at it from the viewpoint of the entire Bible, uh, the original audience. Uh I can hear someone going, well, what's the big deal? So so I'm reading David and Goliath, and I go, Well, to me, that is that I can I can beat uh beat the giants in my life with God's help. Total truth. And you can find scriptures that affirm that. But if you're asking, what's the big deal, even if I don't get it right, that's still something that's God's truth. I think the big deal is what if you miss that vital truth that God was trying to to communicate here by just assuming this is what I want it to be about.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Um Yeah, I've heard it put by many people the Bible's written for us but not to us. We're not the original audience. And if we can kind of figure out what was the original audience hearing, what did the author want them to hear? And then we put ourselves in their shoes, we get a better picture of what God actually wants to speak to us today. Right.
SPEAKER_02Right. Um and then the beautiful thing is from that, um, speaking to that original audience, we have the same needs, the same um the same spiritual uh needs that uh those guys had. Um so scripture is is alive and active, God breathed. It was for them. The more you figure out what it was that the Lord was trying to communicate to them, the beautiful thing is the more you figure out what it is he's trying to communicate to you. That's why this is a big deal.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and and and the way what you just said was true, they needed a deliverer, they needed a king, they needed a rescuer, they needed someone to lead them in God's way. It's like, man, we we need that too.
SPEAKER_02Right.
SPEAKER_00And what God provided David for them, we see ultimately that fulfilled for us in Jesus. And um, but you're right in saying um this is not a world apart. Yes, it's a different culture and different time. Right. We still have the same need.
SPEAKER_02Same need, same need for for the Messiah. Um so I got one last one here, maybe a a little bit of a curveball.
Shellfish Laws And Moral Commands
SPEAKER_02Um this is actually it's so funny. I said I was gonna make a joke about I said, you know, I've got a verse from Leviticus, and I was gonna make a joke to you and say, because you know, I know you've been studying Leviticus so much recently. Well, it turns out you have been.
SPEAKER_00And you actually do have a verse from Leviticus.
SPEAKER_02And I do actually have a verse from Leviticus. So these are the scriptures in uh 11, Leviticus 11, 9 through 12, without reading them all. Basically, this is God saying Israelites shouldn't eat seafood, um, especially shellfish, that that you know it it needs to be c clean, kind of classifying creatures like shrimp, crab, lobster as unclean and God puts it says as detestable abominations. Now, I cannot tell you how many times I have heard people use this scripture or or another one that is is from what what we call sometimes the Mosaic Law, um that uh as a way to say To fend off God's clear instructions about particularly difficult commandments, like, well, God says homosexual behavior. We are to abstain, abstain from homosexual behavior. Well, he also said, don't eat shellfish. So so you're telling me that that I can't eat lobster too? Whether they're saying that out of ignorance or not, it's important to know kind of the difference, without getting too deep into it here, between ceremonial laws that God gave Israelites. The next time someone says that to you to try to shut you down about one of God's tougher areas of obedience, you just say to them, hey, that was a ceremonial law that God gave the Israelites in the Old Testament that aren't for us today.
SPEAKER_00And then you walk away.
SPEAKER_02But that is true. So so um these were putting it briefly here, that there were um there were laws that uh God gave the Israelites in the Old Testament that aren't for us today, necessarily, temporary rules intended to kind of physically and culturally separate ancient Israel from nations that God called pagan. Um some of these things, uh th these uh commandments are fulfilled and lifted back up in the New Testament or referenced in the New Testament. These are called moral laws, okay, that are upheld by the New Testament today. So while God has a problem with with um with homosexual behavior in the Old Testament, he also does in the New Testament. So you go, okay, this wasn't just something for the Israelites, this is a moral law, some people call it, um, for all of us. So um, and and moral laws are just reflect God's unchanging character. Right. So while ceremonial laws tied to the old covenant, moral laws kind of transcend ancient Israel and are affirmed in the New Testament. You know, I know I'm sure lots of folks listening are probably aware of these things, but sometimes I'm surprised by how many believers get deer in the headlight looks when someone throws something like that. There's there's I don't know, man, there's just folks who just don't want certain things to be in God's word will almost always try to figure out a way to explain them away. And this is one of the big ones.
SPEAKER_00Well, and it does also bring up a difficult question. Sometimes those distinctions you made are a little bit hard to know which one is this? Is this a law that I'm supposed to keep today? Yeah. And if so, why? And and I I think you're you're spot on. There's an old testament scholar named Christopher Wright who's helpfulness, and he he talks about this is just a helpful diagnostic question. Is this command that we're reading in the Old Testament law does it can it find its basis in God's good design and creation? So, something like human sexuality, if you read Genesis one and two, and then you read God's laws for sexuality in Leviticus, and then you read about it in the New Testament, they line up. There's a continuity between those sections of the Bible. But if you read Genesis one to two, and then you read about shellfish in Leviticus, um, there's not really a continuity there. And so from that you might deduce this might be a law that applied to ancient Israel to set them apart, like you said, um, but has been lifted in the New Testament. Specifically, I'm thinking about the Gospel of Mark. Um, he writes, Jesus declared all foods clean.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Um, does that mean that that law is totally irrelevant to us? No. In in reading the Old Testament law, we get a sense of the heart of the lawgiver. We get to know God a little bit better.
SPEAKER_02I love the way you put that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Uh can you say that one more time? It gives us a If we read the Old Testament law, we get a sense of the heart of the lawgiver. And that's that's not uh I'm I'm pulling from other people's ideas here. Um but that those those questions were helpful for me. But I think you're spot on in saying, um maybe growing up when I I would have if I if someone asked me that question, I would have gone, yeah, why do we? Yeah, good point. They're both in the Leviticus. Why do we follow one and not the other? Um finding that law in its context can really be helpful for us to know. Here's why we keep this law, and here's why we don't keep this law. Oh man. I got our last one.
Jeremiah 29:11 For Exiles
SPEAKER_00All right. Uh and this is this is this is the ultimate, ultimate coffee cup verse. And that's why I just feel a sense of dread. You look you look a little consternated. Jeremiah 2911. Oh, here it is. This is the ultimate coffee cup verse. We could put this under the heading of overpersonalizing. Yeah. Um we should person we should read the Bible for us and apply it for us, but we shouldn't always think it's exactly only about us. So here's the context of Jeremiah 2911. Backing up to verse 10. For thus says the Lord, when seventy years are completed for Babylon, I will visit you and I will fulfill my promise to you and bring you back to this place. For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. So what's the context? The context is exiled Israel. They have been sent out of their land because of their sin. Now, is it wrong to apply Jeremiah 2911 to your personal life? No. But understanding it its context actually is actually makes it better news. Oh, makes it the you in verse 11 is plural. It's not singular. I know the plans I have for y'all.
SPEAKER_01Hmm.
SPEAKER_00Uh, who are the y'all in verse in verse 11? Um, it's exiled Israel, God's people. Um, they've been rebellious against God, they've been deported to another land to Babylon, and they're living in Babylon. And God promises that even though you rebelled against me and you were disciplined by being sent out of land, that's not gonna stop my purposes for you. I know the plans I have for you, my people. And your rebellion against me is not gonna stop that. It's gonna keep going. Oh man. I'm gonna bring you back in. So much richer. Right, right. You get a sense of uh of the whole story, you get a sense of, oh, it's not just now again, is God sovereign over my life and is that good news? Yeah, that's really good news.
SPEAKER_02Right uh uh plans he prepared in advance for you to do, created in Christ Jesus.
SPEAKER_00Absolutely. God has every second of my life planned out. That's great news. But what this is talking about is Israel, you and God's people. I'm a part of God's people today. You've really blown it. In fact, you've blown it so badly that it looks like you're all hope is gone. No, no, no. My plans for you are so good and so sure that I'm gonna make sure that they happen, even though you've really dropped the ball.
SPEAKER_02Again, if you're going, what's the big deal? It's still true that God uh Jesse and I aren't we didn't decide to do this today to go, ha, you something you've believed about this for forever, uh you've been mistaken. Of course, the God i is sovereign over our lives and does have plans for us. But again, the big deal of of not being careful about uh especially verses that get used over and over and over and not looking at them deeper is you're gonna lose the richness and and because that even what you just described to me, Jesse, just in an instant I went, Whoa, that is so much more powerful than what I thought when I originally saw a kitty cat in a cup hanging, you know, in a coffee cup with that on a poster, you know what I'm saying? Uh so we're we are there's so much more we
Practical Hermeneutics And Humility
SPEAKER_02could talk about um today. A couple practical steps real quick, and let's we'll probably do another podcast about just just um some thoughts about how to get the most out of God's word. What's the context of the the passage you're reading? Who are the authors talking to? Um that guy, hermeneutics, again, look that up. Google AI hermeneutics, it's good stuff. What was the situation he was speaking that into? How does this passage fit in with the what the rest of Scripture tells us? And what does it tell you about who God is and and how you would respond to him today?
SPEAKER_00Um here's here's one more. Yeah. When we approach um whatever passage we're reading, uh we do so coming underneath its authority, not over it to figure it out. Uh so there's a certain level of humility that has we we have to have in approaching God's word where I'm not the one um who has the answers and I'm dissecting this to figure it, figure this out. I'm coming underneath its authority. What it has to say to me, that's the bottom line. And whatever it says to me, that's what I gotta run with. And so that's why we have to dig as deep as we can to say, God, what is this actually saying because I'm under its authority.
SPEAKER_02Some of the most awful things in history have been from guys cherry picking a Bible verse, and saying, Well, see, and and they for racism, for um uh for murder, for just the most awful things you can think of, it most of God's people aren't going to head that direction, but it's just an example of if you take it far enough um and don't care enough about understanding to show ourselves a workman approved, um some some serious stuff can come from it. Hey, no shame. If you've been I I will tell you this, I can't tell you how many times I I I believed one thing about script of scripture and even recently, and I really jumped into it and and got good counsel and and got some good commentaries and and uh did some some good old hermeneutics stuff and went, I've been getting this either not either not completely right, but I've been missing some of the richness and the beauty from this, and that's why this is important. So don't don't no shame if you've been reading it wrong, something wrong for a while. We all do. Now's your chance to dig into his word in a more meaningful way, and just wait and see what incredible truths God has waiting for you. Uh thank you, Jesse. Substitute teacher something. Um, still trying to figure that out. But uh I like I loved most of my subs more than uh the teachers themselves because they never really made us do any work.
